Happy Meal usually contains a main item such as a hamburger, cheeseburger, or chicken McNuggets; a side item like French Fries, Apple Slices, or a salad; and a drink like milk, juice, or a soft drink.

There is usually a special marketing campaign for movies, series, cartoons, or other products related to the Happy Meal. Currently, the plush toy company Squishmallows is running an ad campaign with McDonald’s.

Why Is It Called the Happy Meal?

The Happy Meal got its name from a 1960s McDonald’s commercial where the jingle called the restaurant a happy place. The name also takes inspiration from the character Ronald McDonald’s jolly and happy persona.

The concept of a separate kid’s meal was proposed by the famous businessman and entrepreneur Bob Bernstein. He figured that kids would be more attracted to order a whole packaged meal instead of pecking at the parent’s food if it was marketed correctly.

Bernstein put the proposal of making this separate kid’s meal in front of the corporate and other restaurant owners and received positive feedback. He put a lot of emphasis on the packaging and hired illustrators to design the package in a way that would be attractive to kids.

Bernstein himself named this kid’s meal The Happy Meal and launched the entire campaign in October 1977 in Kansas City. Other locations followed suit and The Happy Meal was in full circulation by 1979.

What Age Is Happy Meal For?

The Happy Meal does not have any particular age limitation and is for everyone to enjoy. The toys that come with the Happy Meal are designed for and marketed towards kids aged three to nine years old but you do not have to be in this particular age group to enjoy having them.

The packaging and overall marketing are formulated to be attractive to kids but there is no age limit to it. You can order The Happy Meal at any age at McDonald’s and enjoy your meal.

What Are the McDonald’s Happy Meal Menu?

Currently, McDonald’s has three separate Happy Meals on the menu. Hamburger Happy Meal comes with a juicy McDonald’s Hamburger, kid-sized French Fries, Apple Slices, and a drink. You can choose from 1% Low Fat Milk Jug, Reduced Sugar Low Fat Chocolate Milk, Dasani Water, and Honest Kids Appley Ever After Organic Juice Drink as the drink to go with the meal. This entire menu consists of 475 calories.

Another option is the 4-piece Chicken McNuggets Happy Meal which features four tender Chicken McNugets made with white meat, kid-sized French Fries, Apple Slices, and a drink.

The third option is the 6-piece Chicken McNuggets Happy Meal which includes all the items of the 4-piece Chicken McNuggets with two additional Chicken Nuggets.
